Derek Thompson is a retired cosmetology instructor and former cosmetologist who founded the Vancouver-area nonprofit HANDS of Favor in 2013. The organization provided grooming services to homeless and underserved residents through partnerships across Oregon and Washington. Portland appointed Thompson to its Committee on Community-Engaged Policing for a term from February 2023 through August 2024. He previously ran for Vancouver City Council in 2025.

She earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and a teaching certificate from Western Washington University and a master's degree from Washington State University Vancouver.
