He is a lifelong farmer who owns and operates Rocker P. Cattle Company LLC and is a member of the Missouri Farm Bureau. Before entering the legislature he served as superintendent of the Sedalia school district. He is seeking the seat being vacated by term-limited Senator Sandy Crawford, whose endorsement he holds.

He describes his entry into politics as beginning when he met Ronald Reagan during the 1980 "Victory 80 Bus Tour", after which he studied the Constitution, became a teacher, and served as a Missouri delegate. He lives in Fair Play, Missouri with his wife Marsha, and the couple are members of the Bolivar Church of Christ. He previously ran for Missouri's 7th congressional district. He has not held elected public office.
