Introduced Legislative Bill 1343, proposing to change who appoints two state watchdogs. The bill would have given the Legislature's Executive Board the power to appoint the Inspector General of Nebraska Child Welfare and the Inspector General of the Nebraska Correctional System. Those officials investigate and audit the state's child welfare system and its prisons. Under the law at the time, the Public Counsel appointed them with sign-off from two committee chairs. The bill would also have removed the five-year limit on their terms. The Legislature set the bill aside without deciding on April 18, 2024, so it never became law.
