  • Testified to the Kansas House Education Committee on January 18, 2024, urging stronger computer science teaching in Kansas schools. Eakins said Kansas averaged about 7,500 tech job openings a month while its colleges graduated only 584 computer science majors. She argued the state leans too heavily on high school career and technical courses. She said schools should instead teach computational thinking from the early grades, meaning breaking problems down so they can be solved step by step. She pointed to Arkansas, which requires a computer science credit to graduate and pays teachers to get trained. She said Kansas still has no statewide plan, no teacher certification path, and no graduation requirement.
